SITE COUNCIL MINUTES

Site Council Meeting – 1/21/2009    2:45 PM

Members Present:  Mike McGuire; Susie Luckey; Steph Eldore; Kari Davis; Shannon Leritz; Jeff Johnson; Verne Melvin; Peggy Wood

OLD BUSINESS:

1.     Enrollment and ADA – Total enrollment as of today 55   K - 6; 1st – 10; 2nd – 11; 3rd – 8; 4th – 7; 5th – 5; 6th - 8 - ADA 96%.

2.     District Report – Mike briefed us on about the cuts from the state – he and board members will be traveling to Boise to get the news on cuts.  Snow/cold was a challenge for the district with keeping the building heated and the snow removed from exits, roofs, parking lots – the main focus was on keeping our students and staff safe.  As of right now we are not needing to make up any snow days – however if we miss more days they we may need to look into adding a day.  The seniors and preschool are very close to their hours needed.  Funding is a main focus as we are down in numbers.  Racheal’s Challenge is an assembly being held Feb. 5th at the Jr. and High school she was the first young lady killed in Columbine – it’s her story – Mike said the response has been quite amazing how her life has affected people since her death.  Times are 8:00 at the Jr. High, 10:00 and 6:00 at the High School – all are opened to the public – this assembly helps in making people be aware of how they treat others.

NEW BUSINESS:

1.     District Curriculum Work:  the district is working on new report cards; kindergarten has a new report card – all teachers will meet on Friday to work on fine tuning report cards.  From the previous survey parents made note that they would like to see a better report card that explains their child more.  Sara & Shannon are piloting a new math program and all the elementary teachers will meet in May or June to choose the best one for our students.  There are no workbooks as the students are use to now, they like the technology part and that they stay with a topic longer.

2.     Cross Country Ski Days:  PLE & Idaho Hill have already skied and will be skiing today on Feb. 13th – with activities planned for our 5th/6th graders and Idaho Hill 6th graders.  PRE is coming Thursday and Feb 10th.  The club house is not plowed so the bus has been dropping students off at the trailhead.  There are many wonderful volunteers helping with the students receiving hot chocolate and a snack after skiing.  Nancy and Peggy will be taking the 3rd – 6th grade PE classes skiing a few times outside in the back of the school.

3.     Title 1 Family Fun Night:  is scheduled for Feb. 19th 5:00 – 7:00.  Shannon will have a session for Title 1 parents and then opened for all of PLE parents/students for dinner and reading board games.  Title will pay for title families and PTO will pay the rest of the money needed.  In the past when we have put up a donation can – PTO had to pay little or none of the expenses.  Sara traveled to Texas to train to be our district’s Read-Well Trainer.

4.     After School Tutoring:  PLE staff will be offering extra tutoring to all students that received a 1 on the fall IRI test for primary and by teacher recommendation on 3rd – 6th grades.  This will be offered on Monday’s and Tuesday’s with Wendy picking up the students on her way south to connect with the High School bus.  Steph/Jessica is tutoring for the Jr High and High school Mon – Thurs for about five students with the main focus on Math and Science or any homework they might need help with.

5.     IRI Testing:  Title will be testing K-3rd Feb 3rd and 4th.

6.     Building/Facilities: PLE received a new outside door for the recess exit with windows – PR Glass finished putting the seals on the door and the outside door knob.  With the latest brown-outs our heaters were affected and we are very fortunate that we didn’t have a fire with how hot they got.  The amps into the building is off it should be 220- but coming in at 214.  Dan Davis has been keeping the front peak knocked off with snow, Paul and Steve have shoveled and Paul Storro pushed the snow back in the parking lot and all around the building.

7.     Exxon -Mobile Grant: PLE has received a grant once again for Math and Science materials with the help of Pete and Jackie from PL Service Center.

8.     Missoula Children’s Theater:  PLE Art Smart is bringing Missoula Children’s Theater to our school the first week of March with performances on Friday and Saturday.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our school/community.  Allison Hagman is the key contact person; she is planning a meeting on Feb 5th at 2:45 to help with this production.  Rehearsals are scheduled from 2:45 – 7 that week however, not all students will be required for each rehearsal – it will depend on the part.  This will involve students K – 12 and if more students needed then we will ask for additional students as needed from outside PL area.

9.     NAEP:  National Assessment Education Program will be testing PLE 4th graders on March 5th – each student will receive one test; Math, Science, Language – Susie, Shannon and Jessica filled out the testy books and Susie will meet with the rep on Thursday.  The test is 90 minutes and will not affect the student’s grade.

Next meeting February 25th at 2:45.  Meeting adjourned at 4:00.

Respectfully submitted by Peggy Wood
